Bravo! Your story headlined “The river reborn” (Main news, Aug. 28) was a sheer delight. I have lived in Chicago and the Chicago area for more than 50 years, and never once did I take the time to find out how the river was made to reverse direction. Nor did I know how it was made possible for anyone to start at the Atlantic Ocean and float down to the Gulf of Mexico through the heart of America. The details of how this was accomplished made fascinating reading.
It was also revealing to find out who or what some of the areas and cities were named after. Portage Road and Trail; J.S. Buckingham; Father Jacques Marquette; Louis Jolliet; Jean Baptiste Point Du Sable; Goose Island; and Checagou Indians, etc., now mean something to me. If this history was taught in our schools, I must have been absent that day.
