Gov. John Engler on Tuesday embraced the direction the State Board of Education is taking to improve public schools, including letting parts of school districts break away and become autonomous.

The governor used his speech to more than 1,000 people at the Governor’s Education Summit to repeat his support for charter schools and renew his call for removing the limits on the number of charters that can be granted.
