Will robots someday rule the world? They will if we do nothing to prevent them, says British scientist Kevin Warwick, a professor of cybernetics at the University of Reading. Warwick says recent experiments show that robots are capable of learning from their own experiences and sharing information with each other and other machines (like on the Internet).

“I don’t think there’s anything to stop machines being creative in the way humans are,” Warwick told British scientists last week. He said unless scientists deal with questions of how to control and predict robot behavior, someday — perhaps 50 years from now — robots will be as smart as humans or smarter.

Still, Warwick said, robots are having problems learning some skills, like how to mimic the human hand (so it’ll be awhile before they can do housework; bummer).
