Thank you for William Mullen’s fine article about the recent visit of the king and queen of Norway. It was greatly enjoyed and appreciated by what we call the “Norwegian colony.”

I would like to add that the royal couple also had another stop on their itinerary. On Oct. 18, King Harald V and Queen Sonja were at Minnekirken, the Norwegian Lutheran Memorial Church in Logan Square. It was filled to capacity with many of the people wearing their Norwegian sweaters and bunads (national dress) from their particular areas in Norway. The minister, Pastor Hans A. Garvas, preached in Norwegian and the Bjornson Male Chorus contributed to the festivities.

Following the service the congregation went down to the fellowship hall to shake hands with the royal couple, listen to the king say a few words, and enjoy the many homemade Norwegian cookies served by the women of the church.

This was a very special day for those of us who attended the service. It was also a learning experience as we observed all of the security measures that were taken both in and outside of the church.
