A better signal of oncoming trains might be helpful. As it is, the whistle on the train is not apt to be heard. It may come from far up the track, especially from high-speed trains.

Perhaps the whistles could blow at the crossings as well. Modern technology may make this possible, especially since the electrical signals are already there to operate gates and lights.
