About 500 people remained without power Sunday after winter-like storms swept across Michigan during the weekend.

Electricity was restored to but a handful of the 50,000 Consumers Power Co. customers that lost power Saturday, Consumers spokesman Bill Johanson said from Muskegon.

Johanson said the power outages were attributed to “heavy winds, heavy snow, the falling of trees and branches and in some cases snow-laden power lines.”

The 500 homes without power Sunday morning were scattered throughout the state.

“There were a lot of single or two- or three-customer lines that were still without power this morning,” Johanson said.

In Allegan County 12,000 people were without power Saturday afternoon.

“They were our hardest hit singular area due to a transmission line problem,” Johanson said.

In southeastern Michigan, about 20,000 customers lost power Saturday and Sunday because of high winds, said Lorie Kessler, Detroit Edison spokeswoman. The majority of those were Saturday.
