Rabbi Philip Lefkowitz (Voice, Nov. 16) stated that it is immoral for the Israeli government to proceed with its approach to the peace process in the face of a divided citizenry and a small majority. If the government did not proceed with its peace process, it would be following the program of the opposition political parties–i.e., not to transfer control of various areas to the Palestinians.

While the opposition political parties are large, they are not a majority, and in a democracy, it is the majority’s program that is followed. I understand the frustration and concerns of those who oppose the current Israeli policies, and I applaud Rabbi Lefkowitz’s call for attempts to reach a consensus.

However, the chances of reaching a consensus will be much better if the opposition will refrain from calling the Israeli government immoral when it pursues policies supported by the majority.
