Some facts on RV use in the U. S., according to a study by the Recreational Vehicle Industry Association:

The average age of an RV owner is 48. Within the category, there is considerable range. Not surprisingly, the median age of a motor home owner is 63, while for a travel trailer owner, it’s 52. But for owners of fold-down campers, it’s 43, and of slide-in campers, it’s 38. Some 52 percent of those who own campers have kids under 18 living at home. But only 16 percent of motor home owners do.

Overall, RV owners use their vehicles about 13.5 days a year. But those with motor homes pull up the curve, racking up 20.2 days annually. RV owners say they’ve owned their heaps an average of 5.7 years and expect to own them another 16.9 years. No, that’s not a misprint. The downside of RVs: 26 percent of owners said operating costs.
