Jim Slama’s call for action to reduce global warming (Voice, Dec. 10) was well written but somewhat flawed. Global temperatures have risen and fallen naturally over time.

– There is little solid evidence that man is the cause of the slight elevations seen in the Earth’s temperature over the last 50 years.

– There is no technique that has been shown effective in reducing global temperatures in all of history. Mr. Slama’s admonishment to “act now” will not guarantee any change in the Earth’s temperature.

– The predictions of global warming into the next century are based on very shaky science and simple computer simulations of complex, poorly understood weather patterns. It amazes me that some weather scientists can hypothesize a 1- to 2-degree warming in the year 2050 but they cannot tell me (to the same degree of accuracy) what next Tuesday’s temperature will be here in Chicago.

Global warming should be studied, but our present ignorance should preclude any meaningful action until we know what we are doing.
