Factory sector slows: U.S. manufacturing activity continued to slow in December as new orders fell, according to the Apics/Evans Economics Business Outlook. The outlook’s overall economic index declined to 43.8 for the month from 44.8 in November. The drop wasn’t as sharp as that of a month earlier: In October, the index stood at 49.5. A reading of 50 suggests modest strength in manufacturing. “The sharp drop in employment and production in November moderated somewhat in December,” the report said.
