As the year marking the mid-decade passed on last week, a story of, for and about the decadent 1990s appeared to gladden the hearts of self-described supporters of family values and, as we say in the news business, rouse the ire of civil libertarians.
CompuServe, the world’s second-largest on-line computer service blocked access by its 4 million members to more than 200 sexually explicit Internet newsgroups.
The move came in response to a demand by the German government. Free speech groups worried about increased censorship in the United States, but there were no other reports of porn sales hangups.
