Getting your Trinity Audio player ready...

People love lists. Why? For the same reason some can spend hours leafing through the family album, brooding or laughing. These people are nuts.

It’s the same reason you have a drawer full of takeout menus. Don’t know what prawns are? Get the egg foo yung, three choices down. Monthly bank statements enumerating financial mishaps, police lineups, the usual suspects.

As if that weren’t enough, Friday has gone to considerable trouble to supply 1995’s movies and music for your list of lists.

There were some startling discoveries. For instance, the stacks of pop music that reached the Top 10 this year begin with A and end at Z — as if some occult force had arranged them that way! Eerie.

Or check out the year’s top albums. Both Alice In Chains and R. Kelly put out No. 1 albums that they didn’t even bother to name, proving that, in R. Kelly’s case, brevity is the hit of soul. On the other hand, the loquacious “Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness” from Smashing Pumpkins also hit the top of the album charts, which suggests that double albums are much longer than normal. Believe me, we’ve thought a lot about this.

At least one caller reported that she used our movie list in years past to help keep track of and handicap the Oscars. Another said that, shredded, it makes a dandy ferret nest.

Knock yourself out.

STINKERS, STAR VEHICLES

Gaily perusing the hundreds of commercial movies released here this year leads you to an inexorable conclusion: Most of them stank and were instantly forgettable, flying out of your mind like air out of a balloon once you left the theater. Even “Unforgettable Summer.” And who remembers “Wings of Honneamise,” which we thought was a poultry entree with sweet cream sauce.

Not every snooty foreign movie made it onto this list, and it’s possible one or two U.S. releases fell through the cracks. If you discover one missing, be sure to keep it to yourself.

NOTORIOUSLY BIG HITS

Precious few singles make the hallowed Top 10, and even fewer go all the way to the top. The key is to invent a snappy name. “Lars Knutsen” doesn’t move product; “The Notorious B.I.G.” does. Preferably, your new moniker should be one word. “Brandy,” “Monica,” “Seal” or “MoKenStef” are popular this year. Numbers and poor spelling are good, too: Witness “2Pac,” “The Beatles” and “All-4-One.” Talent helps but is optional.

GUITARS, BIG HATS AND MEMORY LOSS

Portly, balding megastar Garth Brooks didn’t dominate the country scene as in years past, notching just one Top 10 hit on his big ol’ hat. Heavy drinking proved popular once again, from “Tequila Talkin’ ” to “Whiskey Under The Bridge.” No wonder “Sometimes She Forgets.”

FANTASY REIGNS TRIUMPHANT

For what seemed like months, Mariah Carey’s “Fantasy” stood atop the R&B heap, laughing disdainfully at pretenders to the No. 1 spot. Come to think of it, it was months. The vast majority of challengers slunk off, asterisk-less and licking their wounds.

TAKING A CRACK AT HOOTIE

In 1995, all the albums below reached the Top 10, deservedly or not. Should we take one last jab at Hootie & the Blowfish, the guests who wouldn’t leave? Their “Cracked Rear View” was the year’s best-selling album. Come to think of it, the same title might fit this exercise in retrospection.
