Saturday’s coldest reading in Minnesota was 47 below zero at Embarrass. That was something of a relief after the town of Tower fell all the way to 60 below zero the day before.

Records for overnight low temperatures were rewritten in many places Saturday–from Utah, where Salt Lake City fell to 12 below zero, to Alabama, where Huntsville had a low of 7.

In the Black Hills of South Dakota, the temperature dropped to 45 below at Rochford.

At least 33 deaths have been attributed to the cold, snow, ice and rain over the last week.

Saturday’s coldest spot in Nebraska was Brewster, with a low of 32 below zero.

And the nation’s capital struggled to dig itself out from another snowfall Saturday.

Washington Mayor Marion Barry sought federal help to clear the streets of snow.
