Amoco Corp. has tentatively agreed to a new three-year contract with the Oil, Chemical & Atomic Workers International Union that could set the bargaining pattern for the rest of the industry, officials of the Chicago-based company said.
The union represents 40,000 oil industry workers at 330 facilities nationwide and 4,500 workers at five Amoco refineries, including 1,196 at the company’s huge refinery in Whiting. The contract with Amoco expired last week.
Industry officials said the agreement includes wage increases of 2.1 percent (40 cents an hour) for the first year, 2.5 percent (50 cents an hour) in the second year and 3 percent (61 cents an hour) in the final year.
The average wage is now $19.49 an hour.
The agreement must be ratified by workers at the individual refineries.
