It is now official: Boston has signed former National League MVP Kevin Mitchell to a one-year contract that will bring him anywhere from $250,000 to $1.75 million, depending on how much he plays.

The deal will pay Mitchell $3,000 for each plate appearance, up to 500. If he makes the club, he automatically gets $250,000.

Mitchell gives Boston another good-hit, no-field type who fits best as a designated hitter. It already has Jose Canseco, Reggie Jefferson and Wil Cordero, who is being tried at second base.
