Left-hander Bill Pulsipher, part of the young staff the New York Mets hope will make them a contender this season, sprained a ligament in his pitching elbow Monday night.
An MRI was scheduled for Tuesday in New York. Mets General Manager Joe McIlvaine predicted Pulsipher would miss only a week or two.
Pulsipher, 2-1 this spring with a 4.50 ERA, was removed from the game after allowing no runs on four hits in two innings against the Montreal Expos.
“We agreed it would be smarter to shut it down now, as opposed to blowing it out and not pitching all year,” he said of the injury.
“I felt a little tender, but it was nothing that would stop me from throwing.”
Pulsipher said the injury was identical to one that ended his season last September.
