When Kevin Mitchell led off the first inning of a Triple-A exhibition game on Wednesday, the few fans in attendance were just glad to see a star in their midst.

When he led off again in the second, they began to wonder.

“He must be confused,” said Laura Vankin, from Brookline, Mass. “Maybe he thinks if you hit a home run you get to bat again.”

It wasn’t Mitchell who was mixed up. His assignment: Be the leadoff hitter–in every inning.

Mitchell hit the third pitch of the game over the right-field fence. But he went 0-for-8 the rest of the day, reaching base once on an error.
