Members of a crime victims support group have started collecting petition signatures in protest of an Ameritech program that allows prisoners to bill their calls to a recipient.

Ameritech advertised its “Inmate Collect” program on this months’ telephone bill as allowing “inmates simple access to their loved ones.”

“I’m just appalled, and I would like it discontinued,” said Levada Austin-Giesey of Wixom, national vice president of Parents of Murdered Children.

An Ameritech spokeswoman said the company is required to inform customers who pay for the prison calls of a service fee increase from $2.30 to $3.
