Gov. Jim Edgar’s rationale for Bob Kustra’s loss misses the point. Al Salvi won the March 19 primary because he clearly and consistently stated his conservative positions throughout the campaign.

Kustra, who was a member of Sen. Charles Percy’s staff, could not hide from his liberal past. In the TV debates, Kustra waffled and failed to distance himself from that past.

Conservative Republicans didn’t want another Chuck Percy representing them.
