Bob Kustra blamed his election loss to Al Salvi on many things except himself. As one Republican voter, I voted for Al Salvi on the basis of Kustra’s sleazy TV ad showing an actor portraying Salvi, a lawyer, chasing an ambulance. My first reaction was to laugh, since lawyers are the easy target of jokes.
But on reflection, I was offended by Kustra’s assumption that cheap shots in negative ads are the way to win. After seeing that spot, I heard a radio ad by Salvi emphasizing his commitment to a balanced budget. The only way politicians will ever campaign emphasizing issues and forgoing dirty tricks is for us to elect candidates who address the issues.
