The City Council gave tentative approval Wednesday night to the allocation of $1 million in federal block grants.

Out of 28 applicants whose requests amounted to more than $3.5 million, the council selected seven applicants to split the funds. The council must give final approval next week.

The largest grant, $300,000, was proposed for the Channing YMCA for rehabilitation work on the structure and utilities. The Housing Authority of Elgin would get $250,000 for fire alarm systems and ventilation systems. Also, $150,000 would go to the Residential Rehabilitation Grant Program to help low-income homeowners repair their homes.

Grants of $100,000 each would help pay play equipment at Wright Park and for the relocation of the Health Center. Grants of $50,000 each would go to the Elgin YWCA for upgrading safety and security and to the Senior Services Building for rehabilitation of the structure.
