Stephen Chapman is entirely correct in his assessment of Social Security (“Scrambling to repair Social Security for the next generation,” Op-Ed, March 24). The most important point is that the architects of Social Security built a box with no exit.

The basic premise for Social Security in its inception was “something for nothing.” The first recipients paid virtually nothing and got an immense return. The institution was well-meaning but ill-conceived in construction. Thankfully we do learn from past mistakes and we rejected Clinton health care, which had the potential of being a greater problem than Social Security is today.
