Lucille Cavanaugh, 99, a teacher and principal who started one of Homewood’s first public school-affiliated kindergartens in the 1930s, died Tuesday in St. James Hospital Medical Center, Chicago Heights. Mrs. Cavanaugh, a Homewood resident, graduated from Los Angeles High School in 1914. She worked at the Hull House in Chicago in 1920 before opening private and public kindergarten schools in Homewood. She retired in 1966. Mrs. Cavanaugh was past Illinois president of the American Legion Women’s Auxiliary. Survivors include two daughters, Mary Lu Robinson and Caryl Lewis; five grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren. Visitation will be from 2 to 9 p.m. Thursday in Ryan Funeral Home, 18022 Dixie Highway, Homewood. Services will be at 11 a.m. Friday in the funeral home.
