Your March 3 article titled “First class” regarding Deerfield High and the positive attitude of its students, faculty and administrators was recently forwarded to me by my brother, a Deerfield resident.

In early December 1995 I visited the campus. I was struck by the graffiti-free walls, the “spit shine” appearance of the halls and the cleanliness of the grounds. In short, the physical appearance of the school was such that I half expected Marty McFly from “Back to the Future” to knock me over with his skateboard.

I am advised that the academic excellence achieved by Deerfield High equals if not exceeds its well-appointed physical exterior. Living in a city where little, if anything, is expected of public schools and where parents with means opt for private institutions (so much so that, by way of example, Notre Dame High School in Sherman Oaks has a Jewish enrollment of between 15 and 20 percent), it is reassuring to learn there are oases of hope for public education in this country.
