Helen Elizabeth Roechner Scharmer, 68, a Chicago native and longtime Joliet resident, died Tuesday of cancer in her Joliet home. Mrs. Scharmer ran Bernice’s Restaurant, at 221 Ruby St. in Joliet, for several years before retiring in 1986. Owning a restuarant had been a lifelong goal for Mrs. Scharmer, who achieved it after years of working two jobs and saving money, family members said. Mrs. Scharmer is survived by a son, Andrew; a brother; two sisters; six grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren. Mass will be said at 10 a.m. Friday in St. Patrick Church, 710 W. Marion St., in Joliet.
