Mark C. Monaco’s letter (“Tree travesty,” Voice, April 8) presents the viewpoint of a self-proclaimed “student of conservation.”

Citing the recycling of paper waste, “presumably to save the dwindling national forests,” Mr. Monaco expresses outrage that the Forest Service would allow the lumber industry to harvest some 30,000 live trees a month from national forests.

This misses the point entirely.

A woodland ecosystem is not static, and no amount of “conservation” can make it so. Trees are a renewable resource. The harvesting of trees, properly managed, is essential to the creation of everything from baseball bats to pianos.

The beautiful thing about a tree is what is made from it after it has been cut down.
