Your April 1 story about the class-action suit against the tobacco industry (Main news) shows what a boondoggle these class actions really are.

According to your story, the suit was filed “on behalf of every American who has been addicted to cigarettes” and “could encompass up to 50 million people.”

If the suit was successful, and the award was $1 billion, that would represent $20 for each of the 50 million class members, an insignificant amount to each individual member. The lawyers, however, would probably get many millions of dollars for sponsoring the suit.

Who is the obvious winner in these class-action suits?
