Nikolai Khabibulin made 51 saves and the Winnipeg Jets put off their move to Arizona for at least two more days with a 3-1 victory over the Detroit Red Wings Friday night in Detroit.
Darrin Shannon, Dave Manson and Alexei Zhamnov scored for the Jets, who trail 3-2 in the best-of-seven Western Conference series. Game 6 will be Sunday in Winnipeg.
Dino Ciccarelli scored for the Wings, trying to win them a Stanley Cup for the first time since 1955.
The swarming Red Wings, eager to close out the series and avoid a trip back to Winnipeg, outshot the Jets 12-3 in the first period, 20-4 in the second and 52-19 for the game. Detroit had outshot the Jets 136-75 coming into Game 5.
Manson’s unassisted second goal sailed past goalie Chris Osgood to break a 1-1 tie at 6:52 of the third period.
Zhamnov scored his second into an empty net with 41 seconds remaining.
Shannon ended Osgood’s shutout streak at 134 minutes 3 seconds with his first playoff goal at 4:09 of the second. Osgood appeared screened on Shannon’s shot from between the circles. The puck zipped into the net high on the stick side.
