Along with a picture of an overweight umpire in the April 7 Sports section were these words: “Umpires are worried about their physical condition. They say baseball needs to help them with a program to get in better shape.”
If I were an umpire, I would be humiliated and insulted to have someone quote that about me. I would feel that I was old enough and wise enough to take care of my own body and not blame anyone else for my physical condition. How long is it going to take for people to take responsibility for their own actions? The umpires don’t need baseball to help them with programs; in this day and age there are plenty of exercise and health programs available to everyone.
Come on, guys–take responsibility for yourself and get with your own program!
