In “Minimum wage hurts free market”(Voice, April 5), Gary Radwanski’s example of McDonald’s hiring of 100 people at $4.50 per hour for a labor cost of $936,000 blithely ignores the reality that most such employees are unable to get the 40 hours per week he had factored into his figure. Most get less than 30 hours, or $135 per week, to permit the employer to avoid such fringe benefits as holiday pay and health insurance.

Therefore, a family of four would require that all four be so employed in order to manage “cheap” housing of $600 a month, plus utilities, plus food. God help them if someone falls ill, for there’d be no money for medical attention or medicines.
