Get out the birthday candles, but you’re going to need a pretty big cake.
Jerusalem turns 3,000 this year. It was in 1004 B.C., some say, that King David, a pretty good fighter when he wasn’t playing the harp, wrested the city from the Jebusites and made it his capital.
Since then, J-town has had its ups and downs. The Babylonians did some blockbusting there. Jesus spent his last days there. It was from Jerusalem that Muhammad ascended to heaven and the Crusaders, Mark Twain and the Emperor Franz Josef have all slept there.
To honor the George Burns of cities (it was already 600 years old when Alexander the Great came to call), as well as the 48th birthday of the State of Israel, the Jewish United Fund, Anshe Emet Synagogue, and the American Zionist Movement are sponsoring “Songs to Jerusalem,” a musical program featuring Israeli mezzo soprano Susanna Poretsky at 6:30 p.m. May 19 in the Rosemont Theater, Rosemont.
Happy b-day, kid. Love ya.
