Abebe Bikila of Ethiopia, running barefoot past the torchlit ancient monuments of Rome in 1960, wins the first of two straight marathon titles. Bikila, whose country had been occupied by Italian Fascists from 1936 – 41, is the first black African to win Olympic gold.
