A year before Apollo astronauts reach the moon, Bob Beamon of the U.S. long jumps over it to win the gold medal at the 1968 Olympics. On his first jump, Beamon reaches 29 feet 2 1/2 inches, beating the world record by an astonishing 21 3/4 inches. His record, which bore an asterick because it was achieved at high altitude, will stand 23 years.
