Mayor Daniel Canan announced Tuesday that three community centers will be closed and 54 city employees will lose their jobs at least temporarily because of a “critical financial bind.”
Canan said 11 full-time and all 43 part-time city jobs will be terminated at least until the financial crisis is solved. The cuts were necessary because of the city’s $7.5 million debt.
The community centers, which employ six of the full-time workers, will close May 31.
Only “non-essential” jobs are affected by the cuts. Fire and police jobs will not be included.
