State fisheries biologists want tougher fishing restrictions this year to halt a continuing decline in the yellow perch population in Lake Michigan.

The Natural Resources Board is expected to vote Wednesday on the proposal, which has been opposed by commercial fishermen because other states bordering the lake aren’t expected to take the same action.

Last year, Wisconsin teamed with Indiana, Illinois and Michigan to reduce the yellow perch catch.
