Hospices will have more freedom than nursing homes to care for dying patients under a bill signed by Gov. John Engler.

The bill, signed Tuesday, exempts Medicaid-certified hospices from having to work under nursing home rules such as ones that limit visiting houxrs and require care that might no longer be appropriate for a dying patient. Rules to keep the patients safe will still apply. The bill had passed the Legislature unanimously.
