The quest by School District 68 for a special-use permit to expand Oak Grove School came one step closer to reality Wednesday night, when members of the Board of Education met with Green Oaks officials to discuss options to ease potential flooding around the elementary school.
Residents whose properties border the school’s 19-acre site at 1700 O’Plaine Rd. have warned a proposed expansion of the school would add to existing flooding problems.
However, a system of berms, culverts and one or more detention basins could redirect most of the school’s stormwater runoff through a drainage ditch, said Thomas Miles, a consulting engineer hired by school district.
The district wants to construct a 48,000-square-foot addition to the building, which is now attended by more than 600 pupils. School officials said they expect to have up to 1,200 pupils within the next decade.
The Village Board has not yet approved the special-use permit.
