Without sounding punitive, I’d like to protest the views attributed to me in the May 16 article headlined “Helping teen moms help themselves.”
I did not describe the Illinois Teen Parent Initiative as punishing teenage mothers and their babies. The Illinois TIP includes some wise measures such as child-care funds, case managers and other safeguards that can protect children while mothers finish their schooling. Pro-grams that promote education are important for teen mothers. Equally important are programs and safeguards that ensure the optimal development of their children.
