Bob Wells pitched three-hit ball for six innings in his first start of the season Thursday night in Cleveland to help the Seattle Mariners beat the Indians 5-2.
Wells (5-1) had made 40 relief appearances since his last start May 27, 1995. He walked three and struck out three in his longest outing in 53 major-league games.
Mariners manager Lou Piniella put Wells into the rotation because of injuries to Randy Johnson and other starters.
Carlos Baerga hit a two-run homer off Wells in the first inning, but the Indians did little else the rest of the game against four Seattle pitchers.
