About 200 area residents were evacuated from their homes for about four hours Saturday after a chemical leaked and formed a vapor cloud at a farm.
In a news release, Racine County Sheriff William McReynolds said his department was notified of an accidental leak of anhydrous ammonia about 12:20 a.m. Saturday. A valve or pipe on a 2 1/2 ton tank broke, causing the leak, McReynolds said.
Anhyrdous ammonia is an agricultural chemical that is used as a fertilizer.
Shortly before 4 a.m. Saturday, the leaking tank emptied and increasing wind helped to dissipate the vapor cloud.
A half hour later, the Raymond Fire Department allowed residents to return to their homes. No injuries were reported and no citations were given out, officials said.
