School just ended Wednesday, and here comes summer school this week. Chicago public school teachers return to work Monday, and 93,000 students will return Tuesday, an extraordinary figure when compared with last year’s 22,000. This year’s number includes 88,096 students participating in academic summer school, including those 8th graders who must attend a new mandatory summer bridge program because they failed to pass recent Iowa Tests of Basic Skills. The remaining students will be participating in Mayor Richard Daley’s tutor program and the “Clean and Green” beautification project in which students will spruce up campuses.
