Jeff Gordon starts from the front at Daytona for the first time Saturday, and he’ll be tough to catch.

Gordon won the pole for the Pepsi 400 with a qualifying speed of 188.869 m.p.h., more than 1.6 m.p.h. faster than the rest of the field.

“It’s pretty amazing he could run what he did,” said reigning Daytona 500 champion Dale Jarrett, who will start third. The race marks the start of the second half of NASCAR’s season, and 42 drivers will compete for a purse of $1.6 million.
