Doing something just for the sake of doing something has a ring of hollow concern.

Two Voice letters of June 29 (“Carry-on abuse” and “Politics and safety”), though seemingly unrelated, point to a problem that the Federal Aviation Administration should focus on: baggage and cargo.

I also think that the FAA’s grounding of ValuJet was a mistake. The flight crew and the plane equipment had nothing to do with the crash.

The FAA and the airlines should make joint rules concerning carry-on baggage, in addition to restricting the type of cargo that can be carried on passenger planes.
