Sorry, Carl Lewis, but respondents to an unscientific Chicago Tribune Internet poll say your fanny belongs in the grandstands at the start of the Olympic 4-x-100 relay.
Eighty-six of the 91 respondents said Lewis should not be placed on the relay team, and many of them said they’re fed up with his 11th-hour campaigning.
“Lewis is showing that he is still the same selfish, self-centered athlete that we all saw in the 1984 Olympics, when his motto was: `It’s not the gold I want, it’s the green,’ ” a reader wrote.
Other responses:
– “If being selfish, rude, arrogant and manipulative are qualifications for the relay team, then by all means let him run.”
– “He should go out with a bang while he still has some fans.”
– “I and everybody I work with say he shouldn’t run in the relay.”
– “If U.S. track officials are too small-minded to let him run, the Dream Team should do the right thing and let him play in the final game.”
– “Should Mary Lou Retton get to compete in gymnastics? How about Michael Jordan walking in on the gold-medal game? How can anyone even think you should get on an athletic team just by asking?”
