A federal trial over Chicago’s 1992 ward remap ended Thursday with final arguments before U.S. District Judge Brian Barnett Duff, who will announce a ruling in the politically significant case at an unspecified date.

Judson Miner, a lawyer representing African-American interests, said the map was a “textbook” violation of the Voting Rights Act.

But Jerold Solovy, an attorney for the city, said the redistricting effort represented democracy at its finest.

The suit contends the 19 aldermanic seats held by blacks and the seven held by Latinos don’t fairly represent their population totals within the city’s 50 wards.
