An estimated 50,000 mussels in the way of a St. Croix River bridge project will get a new home because some of them may be rare.

Divers are to begin scooping up the mussels Monday from the river that divides Wisconsin and Minnesota. The mussels will be inventoried and moved upstream.

The area has been identified as possible habitat for the lampsilis higginsi mussel, commonly called the Higgins’ eye pearly mussel, a federally protected endangered species, said Greg Busacker, aquatic biologist with the Minnesota Department of Transportation.
