Developers who want to build in New Lenox should set aside open space and keep density down, plan commissioners said Monday.

Commissioners recommended approving the proposed annexation of the 78-acre Windermere Lakes subdivision at Nelson and Delaney Roads, but postponed a vote on a rezoning request including single-family and multifamily housing.

Carrie Hansen, planning and development administrator for the village, said the Village Board insisted on restricting development in the nearby Laraway Ridge subdivision to single-family housing. Trustees believe the south area of the village contains enough multifamily housing, she said.

Allowing multifamily development in the south section might contradict the village’s updated comprehensive plan, which suggests reducing population density as development moves out from the center of town, Commissioner Kurt Sangmeister said.

The commission also postponed a verdict on a 25-home plan for Wyndridge Downs.
