Mike Royko, in his July 24 column, alleges that President Clinton was “best known to the American public as a double-talking, draft-dodging, pants-dropping chaser of skirts.”

He also says that “history will show that Sen. Bob Dole is twice the man that Clinton ever will be” and that George Stephanopoulos is “one of the 1960s sneak pot smokers who strut around the White House.”

Maybe true. Maybe not. But I believe Mr. Royko could steer a more constructive course by looking more meaningfully into both candidates and the issues. He might even ask himself if Clinton has been a good president, which is really what this election should be all about.

Less name-calling, more objective judgment, integrity of purpose; these are the areas in which Mike Royko should apply his considerable writing talents, venting the mind more than just his emotions.
