As the competition for air time on local access government channels continues to rise, public information officer Susan McCall-Link told the Village Board that programming time available for village functions has begun to decrease.

Vernon Hills does not have an exclusive local access channel; it shares a channel with neighboring communities.

As a result, McCall-Link is trying to solicit other public agencies in the area to contribute programming for a government access channel that would be dedicated entirely to the village.

The village is offering to provide a videographer and pay all costs of production in order to air other agencies’ public meetings.

McCall-Link estimates that about $8,000 is needed for equipment.

She said she needs to buy three VHS camcorders, which cost about $1,800 each; four VCR-TV monitors, at $375 each; three tripods; and at least 40 blank videotapes per month.

She added there may be additional costs for broadcasting equipment depending on arrangements with Jones Intercable.
