The Wauconda District 118 school board Thursday agreed to place the new GET SMART enrichment program on the Thursday agenda for approval.

The after-school program, “Great Education Training In Science, Math and Robotics Technology,” provides hands-on training in computer programming, electronics, math, physics and astronomy for 2nd through 8th graders.

“GET SMART has the atmosphere of a science club, where we use computers and electronics,” said Tammy Buxton, the Lake County GET SMART coordinator.

The pilot program began in the spring at Cotton Creek School in Island Lake, the township just west of Wauconda.

“This program is unique in that it lets the child look to himself to find the answers,” said Janet Ring, assistant superintendent of District 118.

The program is self-supporting by a fee paid by parents.
